You may be tempted to give th em a resounding NO as an answer.To fit into a big data job, a partie has to enjoy or at least not be intimidated by mathematics, statistics, market research and analysis.In fact, to be a data scientist, a candidate should be able to perform the following basic functions Parse through large amounts of data that doesnt necessarily appear row after row in a spreadsheet Integrate data points from disparate sources Connect the dots on these data points by creating mathematical models that can assess consumer behaviors.But expert math ability is just part of the story.Here are some other vital skills that make a killer data scientist package.1. Strong Interpersonal Skills and The Ability to Work Collaboratively Unlike software or app development where people often create products or services in a highly independent fashion, big data requires reaching across traditional organizational silos. To do this effectively, companies look for candidates with solid interpersonal skills and who can c ogently present data in a business context.2. Ability to Read Data with Companys Strategic Objectives in Mind A great data scientist is someone who can delve into an ocean of chaotic data with a clear understanding of his/her companys strategic objectives and help the enterprise find critical information they need to make better business decisions. Anyone can crunch numbers, but someone who can analyze data strategically is invaluable.3. Ability to Innovate Finally, businesses want innovators who have demonstrated an ability to create and succeed throughout the course of their professional careers.Any candidate with these essential math and non-math skills can find themselves very competitive for this hot job.And with a little bit of creativity, companies can also find data scientists in unusual places. For example, in an article for The Wall Street Journal writer Elizabeth Dwoskin profiled a trio of data scientists who all held Ph.Ds and had transitioned from academia to being data scientists in business One welches an astrophysics researcher who conducted research on the giant particle accelerator and who now analyzes business ratings for Yelp. Another applied biostatics to breast cancer research and is now analyzing fashion terminology for Etsy, a global retail community. A third data scientist used a degree in cognitive psychology to analyze how people change their political beliefs. This person now works for Square Inc., a credit card processing firm, to determine which retailers are more likely to have customers who want their money back.I have had a similar experience in my own recruiting where I have placed many people with diverse backgrounds.Recently, I helped a Fortune 50 financial services company hire 10 new data scientists into their firm. Of those, one has a Ph.D. from Stanford and welches using data-intensive computing to assess brain networks while another was an AP math teacher with a passion for statistics and a masters degree in data scienc e specialization from Johns Hopkins University.So, will you like being a data scientist if you dont like math? Thankfully, one of Meghans early resumes has resurfaced to remind us all that she is, in fact, human and that we may one day achieve zu sich level of, well amazing.Recently, a member of Endorse Management Group wrote a Facebook post about the actress applying to their agency. Everyone starts somewhere.Even Meghan Markle started as an extra. Whether youre just starting your career or switching industries, theres no shame in sharing ever y piece of relevant experience you have no matter how low brow it is. And if your resume isnt super full yet, no worries. This is just a stepping stone to your next gig. Who knows? Like Meghan, you might even end up being the star.2. You should apply to the job, even if you dont check every box.Speaking of feeling unqualified or underrepresented on your resume, one of the best risks you can take with a job application is applying for a role you dont feel qualified for. No employer is looking for you to be perfect. And who knows, maybe one of your skills is more useful in the role youre applying for than that skill you dont have. Take a leap of faith and put yourself out there, like Meghan did, and youll be on your way to making it big.3. Sometimes your role in the show is more important than where you perform.Sometimes there is a pressure to land a job in the Fortune 50 or the most illustrious of Silicon Valley and stay there for your entire career. While its never a bad thing to pl atzset a goal and hit it, and to do whatever makes you happy within your career, remember that where you work (just like where you study) doesnt mean everything. Theres no reason to be discouraged if you dont hit your career goal right out of the gate, or if youve been stalled in making a big career move. Meghan lists plenty of roles she took outside of the premier production companies or stage troupes, and she eventually landed the role she wanted from these experiences.4. Connections are everything.Meghan lists the coaches and trainers who can attest to her talents right on her resume. And while that may not be a viable option for those of us who arent in the performing arts, it proves a strong point having someone to vouch for your strengths can be just as important as a job title or technical skill. Your network is incredibly important to how potential employers landsee you, and theres no shame in flexing it while youre on the job hunt.5. Times New Roman is the best.No questions asked. If Meghan Markle wrote her entire resume in bold Times New Roman, it must be the most en vogue font available with our modern processing systems.
