Women in Tech Spotlight We Need More Women! Recently, I read an article in Glamour magazine ~ women in tech: we really do need more!   I love what they are doing to throw some light on the lack of women in high-level tech jobs.  I wanted to write about it as well in order to get the word out.  Tech was definitely not something that I ever thought about in college or high school.  I was good at math but I never thought I liked computers. Now, I think that maybe I did have an interest there that I didnt know even know that I had. The Facts: Women make up 48% of the workforce and hold just 24% of the jobs in science, technology, engineering and math. The average womans salary is 33% higher in science, tech, engineering and math. Tech skills are in very high demand. The more valuable your skills the better! Interested in becoming the next female Mark Zuckerberg?  What can you do now?   Take a computer science or IT class at a community college. Just dive in and do it. Doing is the best way of learning. Draw attention to yourself!  Show off a little instead of just focusing on getting the job done. Play computer games. Video games dont have to be only for the guys! Just go for it!  Dont be afraid of what society thinks of you or the stereotypes that are involved in any industry. Even if your background isnt in tech, its not too late! Many of todays top tech entrepreneurs had nontechnical backgrounds.  Zynga  founder Mark Pincus majored in economics;  Groupons  Andrew Mason was a music major. You’re Not Stupid Until - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career You betray yourself by arguing for the status quo instead of collaborating on something better. You rebuff a colleague for attempting to help you, because this is how you always do it. You stick to your routine when you’ve been told to up your game. There are 60,000 times each day when you have the opportunity to think about what you are doing and improve it. That’s the number of thoughts neuroscientists believe the average human has each day. Accomplishments and defeats But, these aren’t just thoughts you are having. These are the micro-decisions that lead up to your accomplishments or defeats. Some of them you probably have down. Wake up. Shower. Show up at work. Meet deadlines and quotas. Consider the consequences of what you are doing and make changes accordingly. Always consider the consequences Oh. The list starts to get not-so-easy after “show up at work.” That “meeting deadlines and quotas” thing, isn’t reflexive for most personal brands. Those stellar qualities are reserved for the people who succeed. And, the “consider the consequences of what you are doing and make changes accordingly?” Who does that? Only the hyper-successful. You know, these are people you at first admire, then envy and finally sabotage. So you argue with them. Or ignore them. Or decide that they are working much too hard, with unreasonable expectations of themselves and others and you certainly don’t want to be one of those “unbalanced” people! Unbalanced versus focused? Unbalanced used to be the polite word for crazy. Now, balance â€" which used to be a fundamental motor skill that stopped you from tipping over when you walk, is now 16 hours of free time for the eight you generously call work. Apparently, balance is evidenced by people who know which people were voted off Idol, or the island, or Chopped. Maybe worse are the negligently unbalanced: those people who are putting in 12+ hours a day, so you feel like you are killing yourself at work, but the lack of results hasnt changed a thing you think or do. Who wants to be one of those laser focused results-oriented, ridiculously hard-working, amazingly creative, powerfully assertive, reliably self-motivated people who refuse to believe that failure is the only option? Has it occurred to you that your latent success gene is being dominated by your This is what I am comfortable doing gene? If your personal brand has a “I work hard â€" but refuse to work smart” ethic, or a “nobody ever asked me to do that before” skepticism, then we don’t know what to do with you anymore in business. My guess is you have been counseled, coached, coaxed and coddled to no avail or youve been a work around for people who are successfully moving and shaking. There will come a time when you find out that there just isn’t a place, except in dying businesses   maybe even your own, that you aren’t killing softly every day with how little you think about what COULD be done. Quick assessment working harder or working smarter? Heres a quick assessment. Are you are making file labels instead of cold-calls? Do you take four hours to write a blog post instead of using one hour and taking the balance of time to jump on social networks to connect with prospects, customers, investors, analysts, suppliers and the media? A group of managers and I were having a round-table discussion about the best qualities of people we have working for us, and their opposite numbers. Shocking but true, we all had about 25X the “left checks and valuable mail unopened in a drawer” stories for the one that is “the kind of person I would leave my business to if I die, they are so great” story. Meant to succeed Personal brands: think about what happens when you go to work. It’s not a place to keep doing all the things that don’t lead to real success for you and your organization. It’s the place where you are meant to succeed, by seeing the possibilities, planning your work accordingly, doing it, changing what you’re doing when it turns out not to work, and surmounting the obstacles and pressure that are necessary parts of life â€" not just business. Looking to become adept at more than your native tongue?  Katherine Knight has some advice to help you pick up a new language.   In a working world that’s becoming increasingly international, it pays to become conversational in another language. But what do you do when the memories of GCSE Spanish still wake you up in a cold sweat? Language-learning doesn’t have to be a chore â€" in fact, it can be pretty enjoyable, and you can get started with as little as ten minutes a day. Here are some of the best resources for trying to learn a new language. Choose a language to get you started. Begin with your interest… You don’t have to relive your GCSE nightmare if all it’s doing is causing you pain. The thing that will keep you motivated is enjoying the language you’re going to learn â€" so have some fun and decide what you’re most interested in. If you love certain foreign TV shows, books, films or music, that can be your way in â€" and it’s a great way of measuring your progress. If you have a friend or family member who speaks a certain language and can help you out, that might be a great place to start! Or if you already have a language and would like to learn another, you could find ones similar to the one you already know â€" unless you fancy something completely different. It might even be the place you always go on holiday (or would want to some day). No reason is too strange â€" you just need a reason to start. …or go about it tactically If you just want a second language to boost your career (or you’re tired of speaking English non-stop), there are ways of making a tactical choice. Firstly, look at which languages are in-demand in your industry. Some languages are known to be easier to learn for native English speakers â€" including the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian) German, and even Afrikaans! If you don’t mind more of a challenge, Eastern languages could be the way forward. Many businesses are looking for somebody with working proficiency in Mandarin or Cantonese, and Arabic and Russian are gaining ground. But it’s worth mentioning that a lot of businesses are looking for any kind of second modern language, so whatever interests you is definitely a step forward. Check out the apps Duolingo is by far the go-to for modern language learning. There’s a massive range of languages (though not all) â€" including some you might never heard of. (And some fictional ones, too â€" Klingon and High Valyrian, anyone?) It teaches you the language naturally â€" by giving you sentences in the language from the get-go and building your vocab as you go along â€" and gradually teaches you grammar by immersion (so no table-learning!) It pushes you to do ten minutes each day, which is the best for long-term learning, as well as great if you need a little encouragement. Quizlet is fantastic for letting you build the flashcards like you always did on school without the hassle of writing them out â€" there are loads of sets already available if you don’t want to make your own. It’s great for rapid-fire repetition and helps you to get the words fixed in your memory while on the bus or otherwise procrastinating. Memrise is one of the best methods of organically building up vocabulary. It allows you to create prompts for those words you just can’t remember, and suggests those created by other people â€" whether it’s a picture, a word which sounds like the one you’re trying to learn, or a song lyric. Studies show that tying a word to another piece of information stored in your memory is one of the best ways to learn, and it’s worth a try if you find that vocab just doesn’t stick. Get involved The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. But if you don’t have the luxury of spontaneously moving to Paris (and let’s face it, who does?) there are plenty of other ways you can get involved in your community. Most universities will have a dedicated language centre, which should offer weekly classes. It’s the best way to learn the language as you have a structured process with lots of speaking practice â€" and often you can get grants or bursaries if they’re looking a bit pricey. Talking to a native speaker is also a great way to go â€" they can offer you tips on everyday language you might not get out of a textbook. Some universities and colleges run language immersion nights where you can engage in conversation with other native speakers and learners â€" since they’re more like socials, they’re way less intense than the classroom. University language societies are everywhere â€" as well as being a great social activity, it also furthers your appreciation of the culture. Most will even offer food and drink. You can find some great penpal groups online, which is a fantastic way to practice your writing (and get to make new friends from other cultures). Instead of thinking the worse or making assumptions, think about the reasons why the company hasnt said anything. Being ghosted by the employer is no fun, but it happens. The reason you havent heard anything has nothing to do with you! In fact, there are many reasons why the company hasnt responded to your calls or emails. Vacations, mums-the-word policies, restructuring the job, reorganizing the company, lost business, new business, and the list goes on. Here are four common reasons youre getting the silent treatment after an interview. 1. The Company Is Looking For The Perfect Candidate Based on the candidates interviewed or resumes received, In some cases, the hiring manager may decide not to fill the position and hold out for exactly the perfect fit. The company may repost the job to attract a new pool of candidates. During this reassessment period, it isn’t unusual for the company to stop communicating with candidates until a final decision about the job’s scope is determined. This can sometimes take weeks or longer. 2. The Interview Process Is Delayed Aligning schedules becomes challenging when multiple parties are involved, and it may cause delays in the hiring process. The reason you have not heard anything could be due to hectic schedules, a pressing deadline or emergency within the company or vacations. Acquiring hiring approval almost always requires signatures from more than one person, who may be busy, traveling, sick or on vacation. 3. There Is Change At The Company Was the company recently bought or sold? Were there changes in leadership? Perhaps budgets were frozen or the new position was put on hold. Changes within the company can and do impact the ability to respond to candidates in the interview process until after the dust settles. Often company executives, legal departments or human resources mandate this silence. Or, it could even be that the hiring manager decided to switch the focus of the job or the duties assigned. This could result in developing a new set of job duties and job posting. Any of these changes will slow down or even stifle the companys communication with candidates. 4. Waiting For A Candidates Decision Sometimes the process slows to a halt while the company waits for an answer from the No. 1 candidate. Based on the candidate’s response, the company may have to reach out to the second-choice candidate or maybe start from scratch. What Can You Do? So the companys gone silent after the interview. What can YOU do? Here are some suggestions for how to take control of the situation and move beyond your emotions. Leverage insider information. If you haven’t found someone inside the company yet, now is the time to start asking and reaching out. When you find someone â€" and if you try hard enough, you usually can â€" ask what is going on inside the company. While youre at it, ask for an update on where the company is in the hiring process. Keep looking. Don’t stop your job search. Continue to network, apply for jobs and keep your job search momentum going. Persistence pays. Whenever you have the chance to speak with a live person, ask when you should follow up next. Be persistent. Checking in every week or two isn’t necessarily being a pest, especially if you really want the job. Never make assumptions. There are so many things you dont know about going on within the company. Instead of assuming that the company isnt interested in you, move on and take care of you. Follow-up is in your court. The best approach is to take control of what you can.
